Birth Photography

Why Hire a Birth Photographer?
Aside from your wedding day- the day your child is born is one of the most important days of your life. It is something you will never want to forget. Hiring a birth photographer frees up your support people and ensures you capture those amazing moments between you, your partner and your new child. Hiring a birth photographer ensures that you will have captured the entire process- and not just a few snap shots once they have arrived.

About Birth Photography

Birth, and labour are really hard to predict. The outcome isn’t always what you are expecting it to be- these are not posed camera shots, or portrait like work- they are real, raw, and emotional. The lighting is generally dim, so a lot of birth photography is done in black and white. I will take glimpses of your birth, in a photo-journalist style. These photos will be natural, beautiful and amazing memories. As I am currently on the road to becoming a doula, (and being there myself just 2 years ago) I understand how important the needs and wants of a labouring woman. I will be a fly on the wall- and be of any assistance as well. Having been on both ends, I know and understand, that there are special moments you may want as well.

FAQs

When do you arrive for the birth/how long will you stay?
I come to your birth during active labor (usually around 5cm) and will stay up to 2 hours afterward.

Will photographs from my birth be posted on your website?

Yes, I do post images from the births on my website and Facebook page. However, you will be able to view your images before any of them are shared and let me know if there are any that you deem unsuitable for me to share.

What if you miss the birth?

I only take a few births a month to allow me to have the greatest chance of attending each birth. If I miss your birth due to my error (ie: due to illness, attending another birth, unforeseen emergency), you will receive a refund minus $50 (just to cover my expenses for the interview or prenatal meeting). If I miss your birth because it was too fast or you did not call me in time, there is no refund and you will receive a Newborn hospital session (a session shot within the first few hours of birth in the hospital instead)

How long will it take to receive the images?

Editing times take anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending on the time of year.

“I am worried about private shots- I don’t want any shots of ‘down there’ “-

Not to worry! During our prenatal meeting, we will discuss what you would like photographed and what you do not.  Some women want pictures of the baby coming out, others do not. I’m there to capture what it is you want out of the session. I would never invade someones privacy.

What if I have a C-Section? Can I still have a birth photographer?

You will have to ask your doctor beforehand if you are having a planned caesarian birth. Many doctors do allow photographers to come into the room, but if it is unplanned, a lot of times they can say no because of the lack of preparation.  If this happens- I will be happy to stay and document the first few hours of the first moments spent with your newborn baby.
